Rice Dumpling Festival @ Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant, 1 World HotelTuesday, May 24, 2011
Time flies. It is coming to the end of May which also means that one of the major festival in Chinese is coming soon. Can you guess it?
YES! It is rice dumpling festival (端午节), also known as dragon boat festival which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. This festival is wifely celebrated by Chinese, to honour the divine Qu Yuan （屈原）- the famous pioneer poet of ancient China.
The most important food in rice dumpling festival is dumpling itself - of cause. Zuan Yuan Chinese Restaurant at One World Hotel is serving unique, contented & delicious dumplings and the size is BIG! As big as your face. Don't believe? Let's see!
Traditional Five Grain Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Sliced Australian Abalone (五谷鮑魚粽)
RM58++ per dumpling
The dumpling was packed with mouth-watering fillings - sliced abalone, dried scallop, sliced duck, diced mushroom, lotus seed, dried shrimps, salted egg yolk and chest nut.
Five different grains like basmathi, black glutinous rice, oats, wild rice and brown rice are mixed with the glutinous rice to add flavour to the dumpling.
The size of the dumpling is almost twice the size of the normal one. So, you could share the dumplings with two or more friends.
Steamed Sweet Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Red Date Paste (枣蓉碱水粽)
RM8++ per dumpling
If you love sweet dumplings, then this is for you. It taste sweet because it is mixed with the red date paste that create the aroma and right amount of sweetness. The chef told us that the red dates are boiled for a maximum 8 hours and the skin removed to form the paste. It is not easy to prepare the paste. Yet, yummy dumpling is worth for all the hard work and every single details in preparing it.
Eight Treasure Glutinous Rice Dumpling Hong Kong Style (八宝裹蒸粽)
RM25++ per dumpling
Namely, gingko nut, lotus seed, barley, peanut, green bean, mushroom, black-eye bean & chest nut. These are the eight key ingredients used in their Eight Treasure Glutinous Rice Dumpling (八宝裹蒸粽) Hong Kong style.
Beside the 8 ingredients, there are also sliced roasted duck, pacific clam, and salted egg yolk.
The duck meat was really delicious. Normally we will dip some sweet sauce to pair with the duck meat. For this one, it taste good and yummy even we didn't dip the sweet sauce.
SEE! The size of the dumpling. BIG isn't it?
As big as the face! Can I use the word - HUGE?!?
The dinner was mainly serving 3 different kinds of dumplings and duck. So, what is the dessert to pamper ourselves after the whole glutinous rice in our tummy?
Double-boiled fuji apple with lemon grass and aloe vera (香茅炖富士苹果)
It was refreshing and I like it so much. The taste of the lemongrass was quite heavy and the guys doesn't like it
Crispy red bean chinese pancake with banana (香蕉豆沙炸窝饼)
This is the dessert that will normally serve in a wedding dinner. Believe me, this one totally taste different.
2 layers - top was the red bean and bottom was banana which create a good combination.
Durian Combination (Durian Flavoured Spring Roll, Pancake and Ice Cream) RM15
Yummmyyy dessert!!! Don't miss it if you're a durian lover.
Durian pancake and ice cream is quite common and normal to us. The one that attracted my attention was durian flavoured spring roll which served hot. It is crispy and bursting with flavous. Maybe, it doesn't look good in picture but it taste good!
