Peranakan Hi-Tea Buffet @ Estadia Hotel, Melaka

Most of the tourist will be looking for Peranakan / Nyonya cuisine when traveling to this historical city, Melaka. No doubt, there are so many nyonya cuisine restaurant in Melaka especially along the main street of Melaka Raya and most of the foods are delicious (Yes, I tried most of 'em). 

On our last trip back in Melaka, we decided to visit Makan Nyonya Restaurant for the first Peranakan Hi-Tea buffet in Melaka which located at the newly open Peranakan Hotel - Estadia Hotel. Makan Nyonya Restaurant is an all-day dining restaurant that offers a blend of Peranakan cuisine and local specialties which takes you on a colourful culinary journey featuring an endless array of palate-pleasing flavours. 


In conjunction with its recent opening, the Makan Nyonya Restaurant is proud to present the first of its kind in Malacca, a Peranakan based Hi-Tea Buffet which serves a widespread range of Baba Nyonya cuisine. 

From the wide variety of mouth-watering Peranakan appetizer to the scrumptious main course and desserts, we can enjoy for this great mix of tasty servings starting from 29th August 2015 until the end of the year. How cool right? 

I can't wait to kick-start my peranakan buffet with the assorted of mouthwatering kuih (dessert) first.

Seri Muka
It  is a two-layered kuih with steamed glutinous rice forming the bottom half and the top part is custard layer which normally made with pandan. 

Kuih Lapis - a sweet steamed cake made from rice flour, coconut milk, sugar and various shades of edible food colouring done with many individual layers. This is my favourite since I was a kid and I always eat it layers by layers.

Onde - onde - small round balls made from glutinous rice flour colored and flavored with pandan, filled with gula melaka and rolled in freshly grated coconut. This is my childhood memory too, I like to have this for breakfast.

Kuih Ku Merah
In Mandarin, we call this Ang Ku Kueh which extract from Hokkien (one of the Chinese dialet). Ang Ku Kueh made with glutinous rice flour skin wrapped around a sweet filling in the centre. There are many types of fillings, such as mung bean paste (my favourite), read beans, grounded peanuts and others.

Kuih Sago - Another favourite kuih that I like since I'm a kid! Kuih Sago is made with pearl sago and red essence (thus the colour is red), and coated with grated coconut. The kuih texture is quite chewy.

Not to be missed, when you're in Melaka.

Kuih Ketayap - Sorry, but I have to say this again - MY FAVOURITE TOO!!!!!! This kuih is a mini crepes rolled up with a palm sugar-sweetened coconut filling. The crepes are coloured and flavoured with pandan essence.

There are so many kuih to tantalize your sweet tooth but beware, do not eat too many kuih because there are more to come - the main dishes of Peranakan Foods.

Roasted Lamb Leg in Nyonya Style

The lamb is really tender and juicy.

There's a Asam Curry counter that you can handpicked your favourite seafoods and vegetable, and the chef will cook it on the spot for you.

Peranakan food will not complete without the Pai Tee - a thin and crispy pastry tart shell kuih filled with thinly sliced vegetables (we call it Sengkuang, is a Malay word), eggs, prawns and granted peanuts. 

Here, we are given chance to DYI our own Pai Tee / Top Hat.
